"Balance of Elements"
My work consists of mixed-media drawings and installations that expose anxieties, uncertainties, absurdities and overall fragility of our world. The arrangement of forms throughout the work is determined by playfulness, discovery, and experimentation. Sculptural pieces are pre-made in my studio, while other parts are site-specific. Collected and re-used items are frequently integrated into my work. Utilizing and manipulating these materials such as post-consumer waste enables me to maneuver through anxiety stemming from my environmental concerns. This process is at time meditative and provides a release for my unease. The drawings develop in a similar manner. Important to me is how these two methods of work inform each other. There is a tendency for cuteness and beautification as a transformative element throughout both ways of working. The work may appear to be naively constructed, but it requires a closer contemplative understanding of the relationship between the materials and oneself.

Bio: I'm an artist living and working in Northeast Ohio. I have lived briefly in several interesting locations - Turin, Italy and Savannah, Georgia. More recently, I was a Visiting Artist in Alexandria, VA at the Torpedo Factory Art Center for June and July of 2010. It was a great experience and opportunity to meet artists as wall as to interact with the public. In 2009 I completed my Masters of Fine Arts degree from Kent State University with a focus in painting, drawing, and installation. Teaching and introducing others to forms of art is important to me because it promotes new ways for one to see the world around them. Currently, I am instructing drawing courses at Kent State University. www.ericaraby.com
